About the project
Enhancing cognitive skills and social well-being throughEnglish Learning for seniors

Learning English in older age not only maintains but also enhances the cognitive abilities of seniors. Additionally, it fosters social engagement by encouraging seniors to participate in language courses, study together, and engage in intellectual activities as a group. Based on surveys and tests in our 3 NGOs, we found that 95% of seniors exped intellectual and social support.100 % of staff wants new curricula. That is why, the general objective of this project is to promote inclusion and diversity in senior education, aligning with horizontal priority of the Erasmus+ and selected by us our specific adult education priorities. The initiative responds to the needs of 3 local organizations aiming to meet the expectations and demands of both staff and senior learners.
Through this partnership, new educational approaches in teaching English to seniors will be developed, incorporating digital tools to help preventing cognitive decline and dementia.
Objectives:
1.Enhancing cognitive and social well-being–strengthening cognitive skills, preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and reducing loneliness and social exclusion among seniors through engaging language-learning activities.
2.Improving adult education opportunities–expanding access to high-quality learning opportunities, increasing the capacity of organizations involved in senior education, and equipping educators with effective teaching methods and digital tools.
3.Promoting cultural awareness and inclusion–encouraging seniors to explore the history, literature, and cultural diversity of participating countries, fostering intercultural understanding and active participation in social life.
Main results:
•E-Book-comprehensive resource containing best practices and pedagogical materials for teaching English to seniors. It will include two chapters with original lesson plans designed by educators. Three organizations from Poland, Portugal, and Italy have come together to address the challenges of maintaining and enhancing the cognitive abilities of seniors through English language learning. Their focus is not only on teaching English but also on exploring the sociological and cultural aspects relevant to older learners participating in language courses and workshops.
Based on an analysis of the needs of both staff and seniors (qurestionnaire, obervations and intervievs) in our 3 NGOs we defined:
SENIORS' NEEDS:enhancing cognitive function, delaying the onset of dementia, improving mental agility, social inclusion, access to information and empowering independence thanks to English, getting know different culture and heritage through the content of English lessons (increased interest of English language -100% of seniors)-PL, IT, PT.
EDUCATORS' NEEDS: Access to effective tools in teaching English to seniors that enhance the learning experience, making it more inclusive and impactful, getting know educational platforms for teaching English, increasing European net of
educators for the exchange good practices - PT, PL, IT.
Seniors recruitment: permanent seniors of NGO activities, people with disabilities, adults 60+.
Educators recruitment - permanent staff, heads, English teachers, ICT educators with low-income, including retirees.Priorities: staff with disabilities.
Criteria for the staff selection as following:
- open call to give possibility to all staff,
- academic and practical backgrounds to the topic,
- motivation to participate,
- relevant aims of the participants towards the project,
- declaration for contribution to the realization of the project,
- commitment to all phases of the project,
- willingness to share project experience to other actors.
Thus, two main target groups:
1.Educators and staff members from each participating organization.
2.Seniors interested in learning English through historical and cultural texts from the participating countries.
Partners will organize info-meeting during which two main target group can share their opinions, expectations and availability in order to be actively engaged in planning, implementation, evaluation, dissemination and follow up activities.
3.On the basis of interviews and direct contacts we defined also indirect target group: English language schools and other stakeholders involved in supporting and disseminating project activities. It is a broad network including adult education
providers, cultural associations, senior clubs, NGOs, companies in the culture and language sectors. Their need is to get know new atractive materials for learning/ teaching seniors and be familiar with ERASMUS+ Programe to explore it for own
needs.
The initiative promotes intercultural and intergenerational education while actively involving individuals from disadvantaged groups, migrants, both as educators and adult learners.
More than 60 participants will take part directly, 500 participants online.
Learning a foreign language is a powerful way for seniors to exercise their brains. This mental stimulation strengthens memory, improves concentration and helps preventing cognitive decline, including dementia.Scientific research has shown
that one of the most effective ways to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease is by engaging in language learning. It supports cognitive longevity, enhances problem-solving abilities and improves overall quality of life.
Studies confirm that multilingual seniors perform cognitive tasks faster and more efficiently than monolingual individuals. They exhibit better problem-solving skills, higher levels of concentration, and superior memory retention.
Additionally, learning foreign languages slows down the brain’s aging process and contributes to increased intelligence.
As interest in foreign language learning among seniors grows, the challenge lies in adapting teaching methods to their needs, particularly through the use of modern technology. The proven benefits of such mental activities have driven
research into innovative, interdisciplinary approaches for language education. A key area of focus is developing tailored methodologies and didactic strategies that align with the abilities and expectations of older learners. This is especially
crucial in English language learning, where interactive ICT platforms can play a significant role in facilitating engagement.
Learning English as a foreign language fosters creative thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability—critical skills for seniors. Adult educators promoting English learning empower seniors to discover and enhance their soft language skills.
However, many educators working with older learners are not fully aware of how to cultivate these competencies effectively.
The motivation behind this initiative is to exchange best practices in senior language education and develop multimedia platforms for both educators and learners. Project partners will engage seniors from diverse cultural and social
backgrounds, including individuals from Jewish communities, different religious groups, people with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds with limited formal education. This initiative aims to promote European diversity and
shared values through intercultural dialogue.
To improve access to high-quality learning opportunities, participating organizations will develop training programs based on original teaching scenarios designed in collaboration with project partners. Additionally, best practices will be compiled into an e-book to support educators in using non-formal teaching methods tailored to seniors. By sharing expertise and developing innovative English teaching strategies, the project will directly and indirectly benefit individuals with limited English proficiency, empowering them to participate more actively in society.
We cannot obtain these goals working as a single country. The problem of dementia affects all aging people from all NGOs.
The project was designed to address the needs and goals of all three participating organizations and their target groups by focusing on the development of foreign language skills, particularly among seniors, through digital learning. Partner
organizations conducted an in-depth analysis of their own needs, as well as those of other adult education providers across Europe, and concluded that improving language education is more critical now than ever before.
Recognizing that seniors can effectively develop language skills using digital learning tools, the partners decided to collectand share best practices in language teaching. They aimed to explore and compare innovative teaching methods and
didactic materials from their respective countries, ultimately compiling these into an e-Book featuring English lesson scenarios. This e-Book will serve as a valuable educational resource for both educators and learners.
The materials collected for the e-Book will be tested and used during local activities, refined based on feedback, and reviewed at transnational meetings. This process ensures that the final version includes the most effective teaching
strategies. After the project's completion, the e-Book will be widely used in partner organizations, other adult education institutions, and NGOs. It will also be accessible to learners and to the general public as a self-education tool, it will be used particularly by seniors to learn English. Seniors will be involved with many local English workshops to utilize the content of EBook.
The project aligns with the European Union’s focus on language learning, cultural heritage, and digital education. Partners emphasized the need to enhance language skills while promoting cultural heritage, as reflected in the lesson scenarios. Previous experience with projects related to English language and culture has shown that bringing together diverse expertise from different geographical regions enriches the learning experience and strengthens the project's impact.
Additionally, the project responds to the growing demand for offline and online teaching methods due to globalization and the increasing reliance on digital platforms. Many seniors in Portugal and Poland, for instance, have grandchildren living in the UK and wish to improve their English skills to communicate with them. Similarly, Italian seniors aim to become more familiar with digital platforms to enhance their learning opportunities.
By addressing these challenges, the project provides a complementary solution to the lack of language skills and digital literacy. It also fosters cultural awareness and respect European values, which are strongly supported by the EU. A key
component of the project is peer education, where participants from each partner country play an active role in mentoring and contributing to language education. This exchange of experiences and methods empowers participants, enhances their
digital and linguistic competencies.
